conference paper available upon requestrealised with the support of Lumen Studios, London, UK

A research-based photographic work started in 2016 at Campocatino Observatory (IT) during a two weeks of residency with Lumen Studios, UK.
Due to urban pollution, to stare at a clear sky and to a crystal-clear vision of stars and constellations is becoming more and more difficult.&#38;nbsp;In 2017, London reached the annual allowed limit of carbon dioxid for the whole year already from January 2017. The work questions the condition of eye-visibility as well as on aesthetics of glitch and astronomical iconography. Setting itself in the philosophical dialectic between science and magic, Impossibility to see sky embeds a viewpoint of a standard analog&#38;nbsp;photographic lens (50mm), stating its limitations to capture astronomical landscapes in favour of a partial representation of the sky which allow magical thinking perspectives to build up their imaginary.</description>

The performative lecture ‘POV’ is a study presented as part of my visiting research affiliation at Angewandte Performance Lab, Vienna. Presented at the ‘Public Colloquium’ Symposium organised by the PhD Arts of die Angewandte, University of Applied Arts, Vienna, Austria, in collaboration with Part Residency Vienna.&#38;nbsp;

The intervention, intended as practice-based intervention in the symposium,&#38;nbsp;engages with the notion of “disordered attention” (Bishop, 2024), through presenting a durational dance piece set within a museum space during a conference. Using doomscrolling as a choreographic method and turning digital consumption into choreographic material, the intervention&#38;nbsp;explores how dancing bodies in real-time composition are affected by the continuous flow of social media reel-based content and how audience reaction is affected by repetion.&#38;nbsp;Moving through the museum and the conference environment, viewers encounter the performance partially, intermittently, and from shifting positions. As their gaze is interrupted by artworks, conversations, and the temporal rhythm of the event itself, spectators inhabit the same condition of disordered attention that the performance explores.&#38;nbsp;

A set of 20 series of photographic images unsettling the state of ‘present tense’ in the photographic image. By being realised in form of a staged photography where the photographer and the performer coincide each other, the work questions the notion of presence both in theatrical and in photographic processes, opening up to the speculative divergence between the notion of simulacra, self-identity and physicality of the acting.

Scoring Scrolling is a series of workshop initiated as part of my PhD research in performing arts.

The workshop adopts a practice-as-research method to examine the algorithmic production of gestures within contemporary screen-based theatricality. Focusing on TikTok, it investigates how social media-specific vocabularies do contribute to regimes of subjectivity-making and transindividuation withing choreography for stage.&#38;nbsp;

Contested Desires: Constructive Dialogues
25.01–28.02.2025
14 February 2025

10:00 – 1700h

WAITING WARS &#124; Research Workshop Session by Maria Luigia Gioffre

As part of Contested Desires&#38;nbsp; - Creative Europe, artist-scholar Maria Luigia Gioffre has been selected for a residency in the Netherlands, hosted by H401, Creative Court and Kunstfort Vijfhuizen (NL).

Her workshop is inspired by the idea of soldiers waiting for the unknown. It consists of two parts: a discussion on how we prepare for possible catastrophe—whether environmental collapse or the consequences of capitalism—and an active theatrical exercise translating these reflections into performance. Objects, such as Kunstfort’s field beds, may serve as symbolic elements in the staging.

A small group of volunteer participants is invited to reflect on contemporary echoes of wartime anticipation. In a judgment-free space of care, the workshop explores urgent existential concerns, both personal and collective, linked to the failures of Western capitalism and the unfolding global environmental crisis.

Using art as a tool for world-making and affective writing as an aesthetic practice, participants will navigate speculative imaginaries that touch on themes of displacement, vanishing, homelessness, rising sea levels, and life-threatening environmental conditions. The process aims to reimagine possible futures and interrogate how we define war in today’s context.
Set at Kunstfort, a UNESCO World Heritage site, this dialogue connects historical wartime structures with present fears, fostering new interpretations of conflict, survival, and resilience in an era of profound global uncertainty.

Investigating the phenomenon of scrolling as a somatic posture of attention and as aesthetical attitude of the scenic action, the performance enacts and devises three algorithmic propositions –one for each performer’s Tik Tok account – consisting of contents extracted from the social network platform Tik Tok. A succession of fixed movement-units, operating through excess without a center, put in dialogue with the musical repertoire accompanying the performance, drawn from the tradition of the baroque suite, a musical form conceived for code-dances or conceptual-dance.

In both the tradition of the baroque suite and the Tik Tok platform, contents are in fact composed through such a succession of movement-units, in an attempt to organize an experience that unfolds from and through processes of excess and accumulation of fragments, even when dissonant with one another.

Cat reels, war reels, political speeches, racialized advertisements, soothing loops, skincare reels, vernacular dances, professional dances, choreographies produced by artificial intelligences to be imitated, and so on.

All of this material is delivered to the warmth of bodies on stage and to a three-dimensional space, to an embodied matter, in the thesis and the belief of a&#38;nbsp; still possible rituality –&#38;nbsp;that of theatre – even when using some of the less corporeal vocabularies and repertoires ever known, those of social media and AI, which inhabit the multimodal realities that all us do experience today.

A female figure alternates with the very act of a childbirth depicting a circular narrative journey where the newborn comes and returns back to the womb. Proserpina draws its title from mythological greek character of Proserpina, wife of Hades. The work retraces the journey of the goddess who, according to the myth, was compelled to spend half year on the earth and half year in the underworld.
